Meet Our Members: Mandy Helms Sullivan
Meet Mandy Helms Sullivan, a three year 1201 CrossFit vet—in August—and a mom, army wife, environmentalist, runner, and CrossFit fanatic. We sat down with Mandy for this Q&A so you can get to know her and learn why she thinks 1201 CrossFit is the perfect trifecta of fitness, socialization, and stress relief for any active lifestyle.
1201 CrossFit: What brought you to 1201 CrossFit in the first place?
Mandy Helms Sullivan: The previous gym owner invited my husband and I to a buddy WOD (workout of the day). I really enjoyed the high energy and supportive atmosphere. Soon after my husband, Sean, was deployed to Afghanistan. I'm truly grateful for the support and kindness my family and I received during that time from the 1201 CrossFit family.
1201: What was your first impression? How has that changed?
MHS: I was surprised by the variety of athletes, age ranges, goals, and abilities. I love that 1201 doesn’t have a one size fits all practice. The workouts are scaled, with the goal to maximize the intent. I have been able to keep my weekly running mileage while still sprinkling in crossfit workouts. For example, if my goal is active recovery, I’ll drop weight, but I’m still able to receive low impact benefits.
1201: What would you say has been your biggest achievement?
MHS: This might sound crazy for some, but, push-ups. I’ve always had weak upper body strength. I have never been able to do them. After class I try to knock out 21 push-ups, for 2021. Now I’m really proud to say that I can do push-ups.
1201: What’s your favorite thing about 1201 CrossFit?
MHS: In one hour you can be social, relieve stress, and build physical fitness. It’s the perfect trifecta. I also really appreciate that even the most advanced athletes will stop and take time to give you pointers or demonstrate movements or exercises. There is no judgement—and lastly, community.
1201: What are some hobbies, clubs, groups, or activities you participate in?
MHS: I run but I needed a change in routine. Though I had just qualified for Boston, my race times were stagnant. I was in a rut. Since starting CrossFit, I have PRed in every distance since my college days, from the 5k to 100k. Overall I feel stronger, my running posture is better, and my legs and arms do not get as fatigued.
1201: Best advice for those considering crossfit?
MHS: Join! It’s the best gift I’ve ever given myself. Sean now attends and my youngest son, Rohan, participates in Kids Crossfit.
