Small Changes for Big Fun

Holidays and any sort of celebration can really challenge one’s healthy eating habits and lifestyle. From the assortment of savory dishes, sweet drinks and possible alcoholic beverages, anyone would be tempted to stray from healthy nutrition.

Luckily, there are plenty of ways you can enjoy any celebratory event with friends and leave the party feeling like you did before you walked in the door.

1. Shift the focus.

Take the focus away from food and concentrate more on spending quality time with friends and family. Focus on the social aspect of the holiday and enjoy some fresh air outside.

2. Plan before the party.

Before the event, drink lots of water and eat a snack full of protein and carbohydrates. This will help you kick any cravings and keep you feeling full longer. Perhaps, offer to bring a healthier version of a popular holiday dish.

3. At the party.

Munch on veggies while you're socializing at the party. Continue to drink plenty of water as well.

4. Avoid overeating.

To prevent overeating and feeling ‘too full’, eat from a smaller plate to promote smaller portions. Also, remember: eat veggies first, protein next and finish with a starch. Just be mindful of what you’re consuming and how often.

5. Choose your alcohol wisely.

Keep in mind that most fruity and frozen alcoholic drinks can be filled with tons of sugar. Drink in moderation, or choose a lighter drink by adding water/soda water as a mixer to the drink.

6. Modify your recipes.

If you’re bringing a homemade dish to the get-together, substitute healthier options into your recipe. Try applesauce instead of oil or use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream.

There’s no reason not to have a good time when you’re celebrating with good friends and family. But a holiday party shouldn't halt your committed healthy lifestyle either. Consider these tips during your next invitation.
