We’re Not Keeping Score

In every CrossFit box, there is a “whiteboard” where the WOD (workout of the day) is posted and where everyone’s “scores” go at the end of class. The idea of “keeping score” can be intimidating for beginners but should not stop you from furthering your fitness journey with CrossFit.

Here are 3 reasons why “keeping score” is not what you think:

1. Your daily score is for measuring progress.

The primary role of a measurement, or “score,” is to show you where you are, where you’ve been, and perhaps where you are heading. It’s not a way to rank yourself against other CrossFitters.

2. Pursuing personal improvement is important.

CrossFit is a “long game,” showing up consistently is where the magic happens. Focusing on the long-term journey will keep you working hard even when motivation isn’t there. Tracking improvements over time keeps you focused on the journey to continue reaching your goal. When you compare a recent metric to the same one from the past, the proof is right there in front of you. It’s easy to forget where you started and encouraging to see how far you’ve come.

 3. The consistent measurement keeps you accountable.

Your daily “score” shows where you are on your fitness goals, but it can also be used as a driving force to keep you working toward them. Accountability, consistency, and goals are the perfect recipe for a healthy fitness routine.

Find some goals that excite you and work on those. Maybe it’s running, a lifting goal or maybe you just want to do one pull-up. We promise that your 55-pound back squat goal will garner the same excitement and encouragement from the 1201 community as someone else’s 500-pound target.
